Waxwing

Waxwings have returned. They come over from Scandinavia hunting for Rowan berries. They are often a warning of a cold winter to come.

i have never seen a waxwing. Though I agree about the cold winter as the blackcaps, reed buntings and wagtails have already come into my garden and usually don't appear until the first snows.

Thanks John. They are all over the country now. Look out for Rowan trees (especially with pink or white berries) - they are often planted on new estates and in supermarket car parks etc. Some reports can be found here.
